Microsoft »Windows Server Update Service« (WSUS)

The LUIS provides a "Windows Server Update Service" (WSUS) for the LUH data network, which is used to keep Windows and many Microsoft programmes up to date in a simple way - a very important point from the point of view of IT security.

SCOPE & DETAILS

WSUS is a patch and update software from Microsoft, consisting of a server and a client component. Updates for Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft software are distributed via the network. The server is operated by the data centre, the client component is already part of every Windows operating system, but must first be adapted to the data centre servers by means of installers, registry entries or group guidelines.

The service packs for operating systems and MS products are also distributed via WSUS. Reporting functions provide the WSUS administrator with an overview of which updates have already been installed on which clients or are still pending. The reporting data is not forwarded to Microsoft. The reports are only evaluated in error situations for individual clients and aggregated for overview statistics.

TARGET GROUP

The WSUS service is only intended for computers permanently located in the LUH network, i.e. servers and desktops. Notebooks that are also operated outside the LUH network can only access the WSUS service via VPN; if necessary, the normal update via the Microsoft servers on the Internet is recommended in this case.

Together with the automatic Sophos update, the computer centre thus offers you two important pillars for the smoothest possible operation of your Windows computers.
