High-Seas

With High-Seas, a second Seafile service is available alongside Project-Seafile at the Projektablage, with which files can be exchanged and stored in the cloud. Unlike Project-Seafile, the High-Seas quota is not tied to the quota of the respective project at the Projektablage, but can be selected independently of this and can be several TB. In contrast to the other sub-services of the project repository, using High-Seas comes with a fee.

General information

  • How can the service be requested?

We recommend a consulting us before using High-Seas for the first time. Please contact the LUIS support team for this. If you decide to use High-Seas, the next steps can also be initiated in this way.

  • What are the costs?

Due to the comparatively large amounts of data that can be stored in High Seas, a fee is charged for this service. This is based solely on the hardware costs for providing the server resources required for storage. In particular, neither personnel costs nor license fees are included. The price is mainly based on the amount of memory used, but also partly takes into account the quota set:

    (Used memory in TB - 90% + Quota in TB - 10%) - 105€ per year

This value is determined daily and averaged over the billing period of one year. The two-week maxima are used for the values of the occupied storage and the reserved quota.

Invoicing takes place annually in the middle of the year.

  • How much storage space is available?

The available storage space (the quota) can be selected independently of the quota of the respective project space at the Projektablage and can amount to several TB (terabytes). Please note that the LUIS must be contacted in good time for quotas of 5TB or more, as preparations may be necessary.

To change the quota, please send an e-mail to LUIS support.

  • How can the service be cancelled?

If you no longer wish to use High-Seas in a project space, please delete all data for this project from High-Seas and deactivate the service in the administration interface. Then please send an email to the LUIS support team to have the quota set to zero. Usage will then continue until the end of the current billing period, but - since no memory is used and the reserved quota is zero - no more costs will be generated. Please note that such a change will only take effect after a delay of two weeks (see ‘What are the costs?’).

Access

  • Who can use this service?

All users of the Projektablage who have been granted access to this IT-service in a project space via the administration interface.

  • Access via the website

Open the website https://high-seas.projekt.uni-hannover.de in a web browser. You can log in by entering your credentials of the Projektablage into the login dialogue.

  • Access with the Desktop Syncing Client

The manufacturer of Seafile offers clients for Windows, Linux (also CLI), Mac, Android and iOS. The download is available directly from manufacturer's website, under ‘Desktop Syncing Clients’.

As on the website, you can log in to the Desktop Syncing Client using your access data for Projektablage.

  • Access via WebDAV

Access via WebDAV works via the URL https://high-seas.projekt.uni-hannover.de/dav.

Note: The LUIS recommends using the Desktop Syncing Client instead of WebDAV. Access via WebDAV is mainly for applications where there are no alternatives, e.g. in apps on mobile devices.

Note for users of MS-Windows: The WebDAV client integrated in MS-Windows does not work properly with the current version of Seafile.

  • Difference between the available clients (Desktop Syncing Client and Desktop Drive Client)

The manufacturers website offers two different Desktop-Clients for download.

The standard client is the ‘Desktop Syncing Client’, which is listed at the top of the page. This client is capable of synchronising libraries with between the cloud and your PC. This means that the data is also available on your local PC and can therefore be used offline. As soon as the PC is online again, the data is synchronized with the server. To initialise the synchronisation after setting it up on a PC, right-click on the library and select ‘Download and synchronise’. Usesing the Desktop Syncing Client without synchronisation is possible as well: Right-clicking on the library and selecti ‘View in Seafile file browser’.

The alternative client is the ‘Desktop Drive Client’. This client does not synchronise files with the PC, but only displays them integrated as a network drive, similar to access via WebDAV. Like with the above-mentioned use of the Seafile file browser, the files remain on the server, which means that offline work is only hardly possible. On the other hand only minimal amount of storage is used on the PC.

  • Simultaneous use of multiple Seafile services

Multiple accounts/servers can be set up in all clients. Hence, simultaneous use of Seafile in the cloud and at the Projektablage is possible.

Additional accounts can be added in the Desktop Syncing Client via the avatar icon.

Features

  • Versioning

Versioning can be used to track the changes in a library and undo them if necessary. This feature is opened by clicking on the the clock symbol in the top right-hand corner when you are inside the library (highlighted in red).

The versions can be found via the clock symbol in the top right-hand corner when you are in the top level of a library

A list of the changes is shown, together with the date and the editor. The exact time is displayed when the mouse pointer is placed over the date. Click on ‘View snapshot’ to display the contents of the library at that time. Files or folders can be restored at this point.

    Sharing files and folders

To make files available to an external person, select ‘Share link’. A password can then be set, which must be communicated to the external person to enable access. In addition, a time limit can be added so that the link automatically becomes invalid after a freely selectable number of days. The link is created and displayed by clicking on ‘Generate’. This link can then be conveniently sent directly to the person concerned via the service by clicking on ‘Send’. Multiple recipients and an optional personal message are possible.

An external link for downloading can be created via ‘Share Link’

When sharing folders and libraries, please note that the entire folder or library is shared. The recipient of the link can download individual files from these areas or the entire area as a ZIP archive. If the share link is no longer needed, the link can be removed again via ‘Delete’. Once a link is deleted accessing the data via this link becomes impossible at once.

    Allow upload of data

To request files from an external person, select ‘Upload Link’. This option is only available for folders and libraries. Optionally, the upload link can be provided with a password and a time limit for its validity. The password must be communicated to the external person to enable access. The link is created and displayed by clicking on ‘Generate’. This link can then be conveniently sent directly to the person concerned via the service by clicking on ‘Send’. Multiple recipients and an optional personal message are possible. If the link is no longer required, it can be deleted by clicking ‘Delete’, which causes the link to stop working immediately.

  • E-mail notification of changed files

It is possible to activate an e-mail notification that informs you about changes in the libraries at customisable intervals. To do this, select the desired interval in the profile settings (to be found via the avatar symbol in the top right-hand corner) under ‘E-mail Notification’ and confirm the selection by clicking on ‘Submit’.

Notes

  • Sepcial features of High-Seas in comparsion to Project-Seafile
    • As the transfer of potentially large amounts of data to and from High-Seas can place a significant load on the university's network for a longer period of time, the overall connection to the service is throttled to 1 Gbit/s. This available transfer rate is shared evenly between all users.
    • Due to the large amounts of data, there is no backup for High Seas, in contrast to Project-Seafile. However, the data is stored on redundant hardware. In addition, like with Project-Seafile, High-Seas features a the versioning, covering a period of 90 days.

Frequently asked questions for High-Seas

  • The Desktop Syncing Client fails to synchronise. How can I fix this?

In rare cases, the sync client may enter a state in which synchronisation fails.

In this situation, you should first ensure that you are using the latest version of the Desktop Syncing Client. The latest version can be downloaded from the manufacturer's download page. As newer versions usually fix bugs, the problem may already be solved after the update.

If the error still persists after the update, you can try the following steps:

    1. Please back up all modified files that have not yet been synchronised to a separate folder on your local computer.
    2. Initiate a manual synchronisation. To do this, right-click on the relevant library in the client and select the sub-item ‘Synchronise manually’.
    3. If the problem persists: Initiate a new synchronisation by right-clicking and selecting ‘Resynchronise’.
    4. If the problem persists: Uninstall the sync client. During the uninstallation process, please answer the question ‘Do you really want to remove the account information for Seafile’ with ‘Yes’. Then reinstall the sync client in the latest version and set up your account again. You can find help on setting up your account in the articles on Cloud Seafile, Project-Seafile and High-Seas.

If the problem still persists, please report it to the LUIS support by e-mail. Please describe as precisely as possible how the problem manifests itself and since when it has been occurring. Please also send the log files of your client. In MS-Windows, these can be found by right-clicking on the client icon in the taskbar and then selecting ‘Log folder’. An Explorer window should open in which you can see the log files (‘seafile.log’ and ‘applet.log’).
